Back when our son was in high school, Krispy Kreme Doughnuts had a contest and we were one of 12 artists selected to paint a four foot donut. These doughnuts would be auctioned off for local art programs (including Kyle's high school). Kyle and I each designed a side of the donut. We understand that our April "Fish Doughnut" was raffled off and purchased for $2,000 by the Krispy Kreme President, and it ended up at his beach house. A year later Krispy Kreme raised even more money by putting all of the images on a calendar. Pretty cool!
Recently my wife found a drawing that our son, Kyle, did in probably the 5th grade. With his permission, I took the original pencil line work and dropped it into Photoshop for inking and adding some color. What I love so much about this image is his creativity, humor, and character development even at such a young age! Go save the world "Bacon Man"!
When I worked at BB&T, we had a United Way Day of Caring every year. One year the location where we were doing improvements asked if we could paint a mural. Some friends at the bank said, "Yeah, Scott can do that!". Next thing you know, we did it four years in a row. My team completed each mural within the full day of volunteering and we had a great time! As far as I know, they all remain in place today.
Last year for my birthday, my Mom brought me some artwork of mine from when I was a kid. My favorite superhero was always Batman. Maybe because he was "just a guy" who had struggled like anybody else, but wanted to help people and that made him more believable. I like the foreshortening in the legs and the movement of the cape. I could have colored in the Bat Signal I guess?
Life Imitating Art: Years ago a mom approached me after church. I have the pleasure of having lost my hairline to the point of having at least some resemblance to Michael Keaton back in the day. The Mom laughed and said, "I know you don't know me, but my son sits in church and says - "Look Mom, there's Batman!" I guess that's better than looking like the Penguin.
